It was previously announced that “Girlfriends” star Golden Brooks was set to feature opposite Damon Wayans Sr. in “Lethal Weapon,” Fox’s hour-long pilot based on the hit cop action comedy movie franchise.
As reported by Deadline, the pilot, written by Matt Miller and directed by McG, centers on a Texas cop and former Navy SEAL Martin Riggs, who suffers the loss of his wife and baby, so he moves to Los Angeles to start anew. There, he is partnered with LAPD detective Roger Murtaugh (Wayans), who, having recently suffered a “minor” heart attack, must avoid stress in his life.
The original 1987 film from Warner Bros. spawned three sequels starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. There has been talk of a fifth “Lethal Weapon” film, but Gibson and Glover have expressed disinterest.
Brooks was preparing to play “Roger’s hardworking, perceptive and loving wife Trish,” who worries about his health and she’s not thrilled about his new “adrenaline-crazed partner.” Now comes word that she has been replaced by Keesha Sharp, who plays attorney Johnnie Cochran’s wife Dale in the hit FX miniseries “American Crime: The People vs. OJ Simpson.” In the movies, Trish was played by Darlene Love.
The decision to cast Sharp was made after the project’s table read last week. Sharp, who is also a “Girlfriends” alumna, co-starred on the TBS comedy “Are We There Yet,” and will next be seen in a recurring role on the CW’s “Significant Mother.”
Brooks co-starred on “Girlfriends” for eight seasons, which she received two NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series nominations. She also has appeared in the films “Motives” (2004), “Beauty Shop” (2005), and “Something New” (2006). Golden recurred on the CW’s “Hart Of Dixie,” and currently recurs on Starz’s “Blunt Talk.”
