Filmmaker Nick Broomfield, the director of such controversial documentaries as “Kurt & Courtney” and “Biggie & Tupac,” will turn his lens on Whitney Houston for a film about the late singer – without the blessing of her estate.
“Whitney,” to air on the UK’s BBC Two, will go “in search of the forces that made and then destroyed the singer who has been described as having one of the greatest voices of the last 50 years,” according to the network.
“The Whitney Houston Estate has no involvement in that film whatsoever,” a family spokesperson told Billboard over e-mail.
Houston’s family also stayed away from Lifetime’s 2015 telefilm “Whitney,” directed by Angela Bassett.
Broomfield’s 1998 film “Kurt & Courtney” made headlines for alleging that Courtney Love played a role in Kurt Cobain’s death. His 2014 film “Biggie & Tupac” suggested that Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight planned both of the rappers’ murders.
No release date for Broomfield’s “Whitney” has been announced.
