A 7-year-old boy in Birmingham, Alabama was nearly suspended for breaking a rule that most people would consider trivial. Rashaad Hunter is an honors student at Greenwood Elementary School in Bessemer. He was removed from class and forced to call his mother because the part in his hair was too deep.
“He was upset and he said I had to come get him out of school because he was being suspended. He was pulled out of class, saying that he had a design in his head but it really wasn’t a design, it was a part,” said Rashaad’s mother Keisha Rembert.
According to WBRC, the school has strict regulations over acceptable hairstyles. “We allow small parts but not excessively long parts that are done as designs. That part in that young man’s hair would be considered a design,” commented the school’s Superintendent Dr. Fred Primm.
Rembert shared that the experience of being reprimanded by school administrators has affected her son’s self esteem.
“He was walking with his head down, when I saw him he was teary-eyed at first because he doesn’t want to be suspended for no part in his head. I told him, ‘Don’t hold your head down…continue to make these A’s and B’s because that part is nothing,’” Rembert said.
The concerned mother took the situation to the media and following the virality of the story, the Superintendent shared, “The principal has decided not to suspend the child.”
