A licenced gun owner from Tennessee says she acted in self-defense when she pulled out her weapon when a man approached her in a Walmart parking lot.
According to News Channel 5 Nashville, Sherry McLain, 67, was leaving the retailer last Saturday when James Crutchfield, 52, asked her if she had a lighter. Frightened, McLain pulled out a gun and reportedly threatened to shoot him.
Witness accounts claim Crutchfield was approximately 10 feet away from McLain when the incident happened. Keeley Benoit, a woman who was also in the parking lot with her seven-year-old son, says Crutchfield backed away from the woman and ran into the Walmart to call the police.
Crutchfield told police he had just bought cigarettes from the store and was asking McLain for a lighter.
Murfreesboro police arrested McLain and charged her with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. She claimed Crutchfield was aggressive towards her, which made her fear for her life. Police didn’t find any evidence of her allegations on the store’s surveillance cameras.
News Channel 5 Nashville reports:
“It scared me absolutely to death,” said Sherry McLain. She was loading groceries into her car this past Saturday in the crowded Walmart parking lot on Old Fort Parkway in Murfreesboro.
That’s when a strange man approached, surprising her, and she pulled her revolver. “I have never been so afraid of anything in my whole life I don’t think,” said McLain. “This guy is the bad guy and I’m the one in handcuffs walking away.”
McLain’s gun was taken in as evidence in the case. She was released on $15,000 bond. At a later date, a judge will decide if McLain’s actions were justified in the incident.
