There were a lot of tissue-grabbing moments on Monday’s episode of “Dancing With the Stars,” which featured the theme “Most Memorable Year.”
It was already sad that host Tom Bergeron had to take the night off to be with his ailing father. Alfonso Ribeiro stepped in on a night that saw Bindi Irwin score the first 10 of the season after a moving tribute to her late dad Steve “Crocodile Hunter” Irwin. Also, Alek Skarlatos, the American hero who helped foil a terrorist gunman on a Paris train, dedicated his dance to the community at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College, where he is enrolled and would’ve been attending classes last Thursday when a gunman killed nine people.
On the same broadcast, pro dancer Witney Carson showed off her new engagement ring and Allison Holker announced she was pregnant, bringing her husband tWitch of “So You Think You Can Dance” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on stage to share the news.
But Tamar Braxton’s Rumba was among the emotional high points of the night, because her most memorable year was 2012 – the year she almost lost her husband Vincent Herbert.
Through tears, Tamar recalled in the video package how Vince suffered multiple blood clots in his lungs and was induced into a coma. After deciding at the hospital they would try to have their first baby, Logan was conceived just three months later.
Tamar and Val Chmerkovskiy danced the Rumba to her new song “King,” a ballad written about her husband and her son. Surprisingly, the routine opened with Vince on the piano, and it ended with Tamar turning away from Val and strutting into Vince’s arms, where she broke down in tears.
Also in tears – judge Carrie Ann Inaba, who was barely able to get out her critique because she was so moved. Tamar received 9s from all three judges.
