Mason was very charitable, donating food and shelter to poor people of all races. With her son-in-law, Charles Owens, Mason co-founded Los Angeles’ first Black church, First African Methodist Episcopal.

Mason passed on her financial savvy to her grandson, Robert Owens, who was once also the richest Black person in Los Angeles.

Biddy, who died in 1891, was honored in 1988 by then-Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley and First A.M.E. members.

In 1989, the city declared November 16 Biddy Mason Day for her achievements. The ceremony took place in the same area of Spring Street where Mason bought her first home.
