The year was 1998.

Deborah Coxs smash hit Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here debuted at  number one on the R&B and number two on the pop charts. To date she has six top 20 Billboard R&B singles and 12 number one hits on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart.

Since then she’s released a slew of other hits, had three kids and starred in two Broadway productions, including Aida and Jekyll and Hyde.

These days she’s gearing up to release Work of Art, her first studio album in seven years. The Grammy-nominated singer  is also starring in the Broadway-bound production Josephine where she’ll star as Josephine Baker, chronicling five years of the singer’s complicated life — and yes, the banana skirt has been fitted to perfection. And if that’s not enough, she’s also taking on the role made famous by the late Whitney Houston, Rachel Marron, in The Bodyguard The Musical.

We talked about her strict diet and regimen (she’s 43 with three kids!), how she balances being married to her manager for 17 years and why she’s telling corporations that she doesn’t want to twerk to get air play.
