In a grim reminder that safety can be elusive at even the most hallowed public places, there was a stabbing incident at HBCU Morgan State University, the third violent incident on the campus in the last week.

The Baltimore Sun reports:

The stabbings happened outside the entrance to a cafeteria about 2:05 p.m., after a suspect was observed with a knife, according to Clint Coleman, a university spokesman.

“Somebody pulled out a knife and just began swinging it widely,” Coleman said.

A police spokesman said one player was stabbed in the chest and taken to a hospital in very serious condition. He was later listed in critical but stable condition, the university said in a statement. Another player was stabbed in the arm and a third in the back, Baltimore police said. One of them was treated at the scene and did not go to a hospital. Coleman said he believed all three would survive.

Police said the attack grew out of a dispute between two groups. Coleman said at least one suspect — a student — was taken into custody while police said several “persons of interest” were detained for interviews.

“The police are confident that there is no remaining threat to the University,” Morgan President David Wilson said in a statement.

It is believed that the stabbings may have been prompted by a fight at an on-campus fraternity party. Parties had been banned from the campus for a year due to violence.

Morgan State president David Wilson said those involved will deal with severe disciplinary action.  “I want to assure the University community that we here at Morgan take the safety of the entire University quite seriously, and as such, the behaviors that we have seen from a few of our students over the past several days will simply not be tolerated,” he told the Sun. “This is not Morgan!”

In the other violent confrontation this week, a student stabbed his roommate with scissors in an argument that started over the cleanliness of their room.

Morgan State, founded in 1867 has 6,200 students.
