This week’s episode of Empire will feature a flashback to the 90s, when Cookie Lyon was in prison, and her husband, Lucious Lyon, had moved on for the moment with a woman named Angie, played by Mary J. Blige.

“She’s a singer, and I believe she once sang with Luscious, and I believe they’re reminiscing in the episode by singing a song that they probably wrote together,” Blige says of her character.

Watch Mary’s cameo below:

The role of Angie came about after a chance encounter with creator and executive producer Lee Daniels.

“I saw him at a hotel here in L.A. about six months ago or so, and he was raving about ‘Empire’ and how I had to be on the show,” said the Blige. “And then my girlfriend Taraji, who plays Cookie, was even telling me about it, and she invited me as well. But Lee Daniels officially invited me.”

Once the show began airing in January, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul became an instant fan, as did the millions of viewers who have helped set ratings records with each episode.

“‘Empire’ is my favorite show on television right now. It’s the best TV since Dynasty that I watched when I was younger, and who shot J.R. on Dallas, that type of thing,” said Blige. “It’s just so good right now.”

Her episode, titled “Sins of the Father,” even gave the singer a chance to reunite with star Terrence Howard, who appeared in her 2005 video for “Be Without You.”

“He’s just so passionate, he makes you passionate. And he appears to be so real, he brings the realness out of you,” she said. “I had a great time working with him.”

Below, Blige tells us if Empire is accurate in depicting the music business.

Empire airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on Fox.
