On Norfolk State University grounds, police sent dogs to attack female student and Army Reserve private London Colvin. According to reports, she refused to answer any of their questions or give any information about a fight at a party she wasn’t even involved in. Right before the cops had the dogs charge at her, two of them sat on Colvin and then the dogs mauled her, according to eyewitnesses.

Colvin, a current Sociology major was leaving an off-campus party at 2:15 on a Sunday just as a fight erupted. She and her friends were approached by police about what happened or how it started and because she had nothing to do with it, she didn’t want care to have a discourse about it. The aftermath of her resistance has been shared through her cousin Whitney Dunn via the local paper Potomac Local. On Colvin’s behalf, Dunn said this:

“Her and her friends continued to walk, and she said that she definitely continued to be loud, however they were walking away. The two other police officers approached her – asked her to stop. Whatever the case may be, they had her down on the ground when the dog came. Two of the police officers restrained her on the ground, and then they allowed the dogs to attack her.”

This is awful. Since the weekend, the 21-year-old was sent to the hospital for her injuries and had to get 40 stitches on her leg. Pictures show that the dogs bit her brutally and blood and she suffered multiple open wounds.

Daniel Hudson, a Norfolk police spokesperson tried to diffuse and protect the actions of the disgusting policemen in explaining that dogs used towards difficult individuals is just protocol:

“We responded to a massive fight that happened in the street. Apparently there was a call for about 35 individuals who were partaking in a physical fight in the middle of the street. And once we have that multitude of people, we always have our canine officers respond out there with us for crowd management.”

So he’s using crowd management as the reasoning for the dogs being sent? But Colvin wasn’t at the party when they approached her; she was with just a few of her friends. Where’s the crowd? It would be nice for Hudson to explain with all the textbook answers he’s got, why the cops found it plausible to sit on Colvin so the dogs could attack. The Norfolk police are reckless with their authority and are using their dogs too freely. If they were so concerned with the party, they should’ve gone to the actual scene of the chaos. The whole thing just recalls how cops during the civil rights movement used the same vicious tactic to scare and hurt non-violent protestors and those images remain heartbreaking to see.

Colvin has been advised to not speak about the incident, but she wants to seek a legal team.

Dunn spoke further on how the family understands the need for force when situations get heightened, but to fire dogs to attack someone just for mouthing off was just too extreme:

“We can understand her getting arrested, because she was being disorderly or anything like that – however she didn’t have a weapon. She can’t put her hands up, or remove her hands from anywhere, or do anything because she’s being restrained by two police officers. So to allow the dog [to attack] is the only thing that we have a problem with.”
