Oprah Winfrey has made public her feelings on the recent wave of protests following the Michael Brown and Eric Garner police shootings. At the New York premiere of Selma starring David Oyewolo (The Butler) and directed by Ava DuVernay which Winfrey makes a cameo in and producers, Winfrey talked about the timing of the movie and the protests.

“Even if we didn’t know about a Ferguson, or an Eric Garner or a Michael Brown… they were going on,” Oprah told theGrio.com. “The fact that they may have now become news-worthy or made national or international news, doesn’t mean there haven’t been nameless Michael Browns or Eric Garners before.”

Selma, a movie about the infamous 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, which resulted in ‘Bloody Sunday’ when marchers were met by armed police and beaten at the Edmund Pettus bridge is certainly coming out at an optimum time.

“My feeling is everything is always happening exactly as it should and on time,” Winfrey said. “There’s no coincidence that this is happening now, but because it’s happening now, people are paying more attention.”

Winfrey believes that Selma, the first theatrical release chronicling Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., even if only for a portion of his life and work, is being released now to advance the causes that he lived and died for.

“Life is always there to teach, enlighten, and open you up to the greater possibilities of what can be done.. if your willing to be awake, and see it. What’s exciting to me is that people are awake. If it took Eric Garner and it took Michael Brown and other instances to do than then… that’s where we are in our evolvement as human beings.”
