It’s been a minute since Usher split from Tameka Foster, but the singer is voicing how getting married at 28 proved to be his “best mistake.”

The response came during an interview with O Magazine, when Usher was asked about his best mistakes.

“Getting married at 28,” the singer answered while alluding to his marriage to Foster, which ran for two years from 2007-2009.

“Most people probably think I regret it because I ended up getting divorced, but it helped me learn that sometimes I think I know more than I actually do.”

The splitting with Foster, Usher battled his ex regarding custody of their two children, Usher ‘Cinco’ Raymond, 6 and Naviyd Ely Raymond, 5.

The entertainer ultimately triumphed when a judge awarded him primary custody of the two boys in 2012.

The divorce and custody battle has resulted in some deeper wisdom for Usher, who referenced advice he received from a true music man .

“‘If you stay ready, you ain’t gonna get ready.’” James Brown told me that right before we performed together at the Grammys in 2005,” Usher said. “I’ve never forgotten it, and I’m always telling people, “Well, James Brown once told me…”
