Michelle Obama, Beyonce and Oprah Winfrey appear on Forbes magazine’s “The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women of 2014” list, billed by the mag as the “definitive annual guide to the extraordinary icons and leaders, groundbreakers and ceiling crashers who command the world stage.”

Michelle Obama came in at No. 8 on the tally, while Oprah ranked No. 14 and Beyonce held the No. 17 spot.

“The 32-year-old superstar capped off a banner year that included singing for the president, performing at the Super Bowl, and headlining the most profitable tour of the year by shocking the world with a surprise ‘visual album’ in December,” Forbes wrote of Bey.

To come up with the top 100, Forbes chooses a preliminary group of over 250 candidates from around the world and selects the 100 from eight categories or power bases: billionaires, business, celebrity, finance, media, philanthropy and NGOs, politics and technology.

To determine the rank within each category, as well as overall rank on the list of 100, Forbes applies four metrics: money, media presence, spheres of influence and impact.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel topped the list, while other notable women making the cut include Hillary Clinton (6), Sofia Vergara (32) and Angelina Jolie (50)
