Forbes is under fire for originally releasing an article titled, “”Hip Hop Is Run By A White, Blonde, Australian Woman”.
The article focuses on the rising fame of Australian rapper, Iggy Azalea. An excerpt from the article reads:
“Iggy isn’t the first woman to find success in the genre, but she is the latest and currently the only one representing the gender on the charts. For the past several years, Nicki Minaj has been the prominent woman in hip hop, but it seems there has been a change. Not only has Minaj been oddly quiet for months, she has said she will no longer be releasing radio-ready pop/hip hop blends, instead going back to her pure rap roots, leaving a void to be filled by none other than Iggy.”
After receiving a major “side-eye” from rap fans around the world, Forbes released this statement, apologizing for the offensive tone of the article:
“The title of this article has been changed from its original version — “Hip Hop Is Run By A White, Blonde, Australian Woman” — because it did not accurately reflect the content of the piece. The author offers sincere apologies to anyone who was offended by it.”
While the article’s title has now been changed to “Hip-Hop’s Unlikely New Star: A White, Blonde, Australian Woman”, people are still upset about the article’s stance. To claim that Iggy Azalea “runs” hip hop is a rather bold statement, and quite frankly, and a lot of people aren’t having it.
Iggy’s debut album, The New Classic, featuring the hit single “Fancy”, sold 52,000 copies during the first week sales.
With a hit single, Forbes is ready to call Izzy the boss of Hip-Hop. In today’s music industry, are we too quick to coin someone as a “Legend” or the “King” of a genre?
