NEW YORK (AP) — A modest family funeral has been held for a homeless former Marine who was found dead more than two months ago in an overheated New York City jail cell.

The body of 56-year-old Jerome Murdough (muhr-DOH’) lay in a closed casket, adorned with photos and flowers, during the service Friday at a Queens funeral parlor.

Cheryl Warner tearfully described her brother as a “giving and kind person” who would be missed.

The medical examiner has not yet determined exactly how Murdough died. But officials told The Associated Press the mentally ill inmate was found dead Feb. 15 in a cell that was at least 100 degrees.

Three Department of Correction officials have been disciplined following the death, which Mayor Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH’-zee-oh) called “very troubling.”
