Now this is a trend we can get behind.

Remember Chad Thomas, the 18-year-old student from Booker T. Washington Senior High in Miami, who received 150 scholarship offers because he is able to play nine instruments in addition to being a rising football star?

Here comes more good news.

Avery Coffey, a senior at Benjamin Banneker Academic High School in Washington, D.C., applied to and was accepted at five Ivy League universities, including Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Brown and the University of Pennsylvania.

Coffey, 17, has already been offered very generous financial aid packages from four of the colleges; while Harvard is still crunching numbers to formulate its offer, the report states.

The student, who boasts a 4.3 grade point average, loves sports and names baseball, basketball, tennis, and soccer amongst the games that he plays. He grew up in a single-parent household in D.C.’s Ward 8, one of the poorest areas in the city. According to the report, his mom works as a technician at Children’s Hospital.

“You can go anywhere you want to, pursue any career that you want to, and you shouldn’t let anybody hinder you from trying to reach your goals,” he told Fox News as advice to younger students.

Though Coffey is still deciding on which offer to take up, he does plan to major in finance, and is said to be keeping a close eye on the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard.

Banneker, a public school with strict rules and policies, doesn’t allow any of its 439 students to bring cell phones into the building. They are also not allowed to enter their lockers during the school day, a measure designed to discourage loitering in the halls.
