According to authorities, D’aja and an unidentified girl boarded the Q6 bus at Sutphin and Rockaway Boulevard in the Jamaica section of Queens after attending a friend’s Sweet Sixteen birthday party. At approximately 8:50 p.m., gunfire erupted and a stray bullet shattered the glass before slammed into D’aja’s temple.

“She sits in the rear of the bus, just to the rear of the back door and all of a sudden – shots rang out,” said NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly. “We believe at least nine shots were fired, nine shell casings were found on the ground – 40 caliber shell casings.”

D’aja’s friends gathered on the street where she lived to mourn her loss . They made several memorials in the teen’s honor, one near the bus stop where she was killed. One of her friends who was with her before her death was dismayed at the shooting.

“She was happy, she was having fun. We were all dancing with each other – that’s why it’s so shocking,” said Tamia McDaniels. “I was just with her and an hour later, after I left the party, I hear she’s killed – it’s just so unexpected.”
