When photographer Kelli Higgins decided to adopt her 13-year-old son Latrell and his sister two years ago, she had no newborn photos of the siblings.

Lacking any newborn photos, one of Higgins’ other children recently suggested that she do a photo session with Latrell and make him look like a newborn.

Thinking it was a good idea, Higgins agreed and soon after she posted Latrell’s “birth announcement” on Facebook.

The “birth announcement” read, “Here’s my sweet not so little Newborn! His name is Latrell and weighs 112lbs.”

The photo has since gone viral, being shared thousands of times on Facebook.

Higgins, the mother of eight, six of them biological, joined Tom Joyner Morning Show commentator Jacque Reid to discuss the photo, Latrell’s reaction, and more; including why she adopted black children.

Higgins who is a Caucasian woman, explained to Reid why she adopted two black children, saying, “there are so many African-American children in foster care….we should not let children age out of foster care because of the color of their skin. ”

She went on say that the “biggest blessing” that has come out of all of the attention she has garnered is that it encourages more people to adopt older children. Listen to Higgins full interview with Jacque Reid above.
