I usually do my taxes through Turbo tax. Would you still suggest I go and see someone in person?

Tax year 2012 turned out to be a confusing one with the late changes to the tax law by Congress – this is why we are seeing the IRS delay the date they will begin accepting returns (January 30).  Jackson Hewitt recommends speaking with a Tax Pro to ensure you’re getting the most out of tax season. If you leave off a deduction or credit that you were not aware you qualified for, the IRS does not add these in for you. Speaking with a professional could help. If you choose to use software or an online program, you’ll want to make sure it’s up to date with the latest tax law changes to avoid any errors on youre return. Jackson Hewitt would be happy to assist you with your tax return, to make sure you’re making the most of your individual situation. My son just graduated from college in May. Can I still claim him as a student in 2012 even though he was out of school by December 31st?

We’ve sent your question to our friends at Jackson Hewitt, and the answer is yes; as long as he was enrolled in college full-time for at least five months and he was under 24, he did not provide more than half of his own support, he isn’t filing a joint return, and he is a U.S. citizen, resident or national or a citizen of Mexico or Canada during the year.  You also may be eligible for additional education credits or deductions. We recommend you talk to one of the Tax Pros at Jackson Hewitt to get accurate guidance based on your individual circumstances.
