Lana “MC Lyte” Moorer is unarguably one of hip-hop’s greatest pioneers. Her musical contributions from “I Cram to Understand You (Sam)” to “Ruffneck” cemented her a place among the top echelon of female MC’s. In recent years, Lyte, now 42, has been acting and hosting TV shows and events and looking great. But Lyte’s not satisfied with just being a hip-hop legend. This year, as part of her Hip-Hop Sisters Network, she’s launched the “Hip-Hop Sisters,” a group of female rappers who hope to find new female MC’s to follow in their footsteps. The Sisters – Lady of Rage, YoYo, Monie Love, MC Smooth, and Li’l Mama will hold auditions this Thursday in Los Angeles at Cascade Nightclub 6611 Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood at 6 p.m.
Lyte and the Hip-Hop Sisters will also host a panel, “Who Are They, Where Are They, What Happened and Why” on Friday and perform on Saturday. The panel discussion will take place on Friday, December 22 at The Los Angeles Film School, 6363 Sunset Blvd at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. The panelists will discuss the rap industry, their careers, tips and information and other relevant parts of their careers and lives. Lyte, who recently wrote a book “Unstoppable: Igniting the Power Within to Achieve Your Highest Potential,” hopes to encourage other young people to grow into their best selves.
“There’s so many things out here that try to deter us from being who we really are at the core,” she told “The Final Call” earlier this year. “Things that tell us it’s not cool to be nice; it’s not cool to be kind or generous or thoughtful. It’s cool to just take. It’s cool to look out for self. And to me, I think kids are happiest when they are themselves and when they’re true at the core and not hung up on trying to be like the in-crowd or taking upon activities that takes them outside of who they really are. Whether that’s smoking weed, whether that’s drinking, whether it’s hitting on girls, you know, whatever that thing is, I just want them to get to the core and love themselves.”
On Saturday, December 22, audition finalists will be announced and will perform with the Sisters that night at the Rooftop, 3100 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles. All participating in auditions should be at the performance by 8 p.m. when semi-finalists will be announced. The show starts at 11 p.m.
