Dear Santa Tom,

I would like to nominate my younger sister, Malika Alexander for a Christmas wish. She is one of the strongest individuals I know. Right now she is tapping into that strength, because her three year-old son was just diagnosed with acute lymph-o-blastic leukemia or all, a fast-growing cancer of the white blood cells. It can get worse quickly, so my nephew’s oncologist began the first phase of his chemotherapy with the hope of bringing it into remission.

Malika is spending her days running her son to numerous doctor appointments or bringing him to chemotherapy once a week. When she’s not doing that, she is in the house tending to the side effects which leaves him sick and cranky. She has been to the emergency room several times already, once was for a bone marrow transplant when his temperature spiked.  she not only has to cope with her son’s illness, but she also has an eight year-old daughter with a medical condition, who has special needs of her own.

Tom, in order to care for her children she has stopped working as a school bus driver and has taken family leave without pay. Through all of this, I have never heard her complain or feel sorry for herself, but I know this has taken a toll on her ability to pay her bills like rent, food and put gas in the car to ensure that she can transport her son to his appointments. It also weighs on her that she won’t be able to get her little ones anything for Christmas, because there is no money coming in and there won’t be for a long time. Please, ease my sister’s burden by covering her most pressing expenses.

Best regards, Christine Farrow for her sister, Malika
