Pop sensation Janelle Monáe is now set to play one of the most iconic sirens of the 1920s by not only producing but also starring in a new series about legendary vedette Josephine Baker.

On the surface, it’s a powerful message against racism: a Black woman will, for the first time, join other luminaries interred in France’s Pantheon. But by choosing U.S.-born entertainer Josephine Baker, critics say France is continuing a long tradition of decrying racism abroad while obscuring it at home.

Baker will officially be laid to rest on November 30, becoming the fifth woman and first entertainer to be honored with a Panthéon burial.
