WNBA star Brittney Griner has been released from a Russian prison in a one on one swap with Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout

Historically, Russian courts rarely overturn a verdict, but they did opt to recalculate her time served. Taking Griner's pre-trial detainment into account, her overall sentence was slightly decreased to about eight years.

Brittney Griner is said to be understandably stressed and depressed more than a month after she was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison for drug smuggling. 

“(As) I sit here in a Russian prison, alone with my thoughts and without the protection of my wife, family, friends, Olympic jersey, or any accomplishments, I’m terrified I might be here forever,” she wrote.

The trial for detained WNBA star Brittney Griner will begin on Friday (July 1), however she must stay in Russian custody for six more months.
