After leaving Melvin’s parents’ house, authorities attempted to contact him again but he had fled, only turning himself in after his picture began circulating on television stations around South Florida. When he was questioned by authorities the second time, his story had changed, with the father claiming that he had dropped Dontrell off at a Miami Gardens fire station in compliance with the Safe Harbor law. Authorities always held suspicions about that version of events.

“I don’t believe it at all,” Flournoy said at the time.

The search for baby Dontrell began after Child Protective Services responding to a child neglect case at the mother’s home discovered that there were only 2 children when there should have been three.

Those two children are now in the custody of the state.
