The official website of the U.S. Marines reports that cadets are still required to complete a bayonet training program.
“The weapon becomes just as effective [as a rifle] in close combat situations," the website reads.
“[Bayonets] are still distributed to the military all the time — he should get educated on it,” Riker added.
He also said that he did not vote for President Obama during the last election and he will not do so this year.

Absolutely FT Potus said it because Mitt’s assertion was so dumb. He applied it to something people could relate to. And he made an even bigger fool out of a man who is easy to ridicule. 1916, really. My father was 4 years old in1916. If he were living he would have cracked up at that remark.
The bayonet is still used in the Army as part of close quarters combat training. Basic trainees are still required to do the bayonet assault course. Besides the military still needs it just in case they run out of ammo
If Mitt had said it, the bayonet company would have presented him a commemorative bayonet. They are just upset, because MY President was smart enough to respond Mitt, in a way that made sense.
The president did not say there were no bayonet use, he stated there where fewer bayonets, and horses….and compared to 1916 (which is what he was doing) is a true statement. Now the Bayonet Community is upset, what it`s going to disrupt the ever growing bayonet sales! HUH, he also said fewer horses, so I guess now the horse community is going to be upset also. Mr Ed will stomp in his disapproval, Please!
