Senator Doug Jones of Alabama has been sworn in as the states new Senator after a drama filled race with Roy Moore. Upon being sworn in, Jones hired Dana Gresham as his Chief Of Staff for his team. Gresham is an African-American and her appointment to this position stands for a lot in the Black community.

Spencer Overton President of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies talks with Roland Martin about the importance of seeing African-Americans represented in these positions.

“This is key because there are very few Black top staffers in the Senate,” explained Overton. “These are the people who actually manage the Senate offices in Washington D.C. These are the people who actually make the office work and are in charge. Only two were black neither of them were chief of staff.”
