UPDATE:

Oprah Winfrey returned to broadcast television last night and brought the first lady and some 9 million viewers along with her.

Michelle Obama Says Goodbye To the White House: An Oprah Winfrey Special drew 9.39 million households and a 1.3 rating in adults 18-49 for CBS, which is well below the ratings highs for some of Oprah’s past primetime interview specials, but large enough to post the network’s largest audience in the 8 p.m. hour since Oct. 17.

In the 8-9 p.m. time slot, Oprah’s special managed to edge the first hour of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent: Holiday Spectacular,” which drew 9.14 million viewers and as 1.8 in 18-49. But the two-hour “AGT” special was No. 1 for the night in both adults 18-49 (1.8) and total viewers (9.5 million), and provided a solid lead-in for the new LeBron James-produced NBC game show “The Wall,” whose preview drew a 1.6 in 18-49 and 6.5 million viewers.

OWN will air Michelle Obama Says Goodbye To the White House: An Oprah Winfrey Special a second time on Wednesday, Dec. 21 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT).

ORIGINAL STORY:

WASHINGTON (AP) — First lady Michelle Obama tells Oprah Winfrey that this past election was “painful.”

Mrs. Obama sat down with Winfrey at the White House for an hourlong special that was broadcast Monday on CBS.

On the topic of the recent campaign she said: “This past election was challenging for me as a citizen to watch and experience. It was painful.”

Still, Mrs. Obama says she and the president are supporting President-elect Donald Trump’s transition because “it is important for the health of this nation that we support the commander-in-chief.” She says the same thing wasn’t done for her husband, but that “this is what’s best for the country.”

As for her own political future, Mrs. Obama says she won’t run for public office.
