FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. (AP) A Georgia preacher’s teenage stepdaughter who was handing out literature from her church was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver who was under the influence of prescription drugs, authorities said.

Sixteen-year-old Caelyn Olds was walking with a woman on Saturday in Fayetteville when a pickup truck struck them without stopping, local news organization reported.

Fayetteville police Lt. Mike Whitlow said Olds was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries. The woman she was with was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

Whitlow said witnesses saw the truck’s license plate number, which helped deputies track down 42-year-old Marcia A. Demarcus, nearby. Demarcus was arrested on multiple charges, including driving under the influence of drugs and vehicular homicide. It is unclear whether she has an attorney.

“People get a little more relaxed because it’s a prescription, but if it’s a narcotic, it’s something that can affect your driving,” Whitlow said. “You don’t need to be out on the road.”

Olds’ stepfather, Nicholas Adams, is the preacher at Middle Fayette Church of Christ. Services at the church have been canceled this week.

Adams said in a statement on Facebook that a memorial service will be held Thursday morning in Fayetteville.

This is sad. I didn’t realize how much prescription drugs could affect someone’s ability until I spoke with a SC cop recently who said he followed this woman for 5 miles with his lights and sirens on. He asked her didn’t she see or hear him behind her and she said no, she’d been taking clonazepam or Klonopin. Read the labels before operating heavy machinery, your life and the life of others depends on it. My prayers to out to Miss Olds’ family.
