Star tennis player Serena Williams says she “won’t be silent” about the killing of black men by police officers.

Williams wrote on Facebook on Tuesday that she was inspired to speak out after asking her black 18-year-old nephew to drive her to a meeting. Their car traveled past a police officer, and Williams “quickly checked to see if he was obliging by the speed limit” so as to avoid an interaction with the officer.

Williams recalled “that horrible video of the woman in the car when a cop shot her boyfriend” — a reference to when Philando Castile was shot by a Minnesota police officer in July — and said she worried about similar fates for members of her family.

Williams also quoted Martin Luther King Jr., saying “there comes a time when silence is betrayal,” before ending the post with “I Won’t Be Silent.”

Williams joins a high-profile group of athletes speaking out about social injustice. San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem in the preseason and has been joined by professional, collegiate and high school athletes nationwide.

  1. Depending on where Serena’s nephew lives she had better caution him on the “homeboys” in the streets maybe she hasn’t noticed the number of celebrity’s loved ones murdered this year by other than police.

    • She “won’t be silent” about police killings, but she never muttered a word about the roaches that blew her sister’s brains out. This is why I don’t put much stock into all this showboating and monkey shining. This was her sister. Yet, she was silent. Not a word. But now she can’t shut up? Not one celebrity, athlete, wanna be or might be has EVER shown a sign of intolerance for the thousands of blacks killed every year by other blacks. Not when a child is killed while sleeping. Not when a child was killed while sitting on the porch enjoying an evening with family. Not when a child was lured into an alley and executed as retaliation for something his parents did. Not to mention the number of men and women slaughtered every damned weekend, it seems just for sport. No intolerance from the people that actually live in the neighborhoods where these nightmares take place. Instead, we work diligently to prevent the animals being caught by not snitching. If another black person is never killed by a policeman’s bullet ever again in this life, we will still be slaughtered at warp speed by our own. And as is the norm with us, everybody will be silent.
