AOL Build Presents Tika Sumpter, Parker Sawyers and Richard Tanne Discussing 'Southside With You'

Tika Sumpter has been keeping a low profile throughout her pregnancy. Not only did people not realize she was expecting until her third trimester, we didn’t even know she was seeing someone.

Now, the identity of her baby’s father has been revealed as her Have and Have Not’s co-star Nick James (“Officer Justin,” for fans of the show). Tika recently spoke to Fit Pregnancy about why she decided to keep the baby news — and her relationship — under wraps. “I didn’t want to hear, ‘Who’s the dad?’” said Sumpter, “Social media can be harsh, and I’m a mama bear, protective of my family. So that’s why I waited to tell people, including some of my friends.”

Turns out, she had good reason to keep it a secret. Twitter immediately sounded off about the fact that her baby daddy is a white man:

Tika went to Instagram to respond to the backlash:

Truly surprising that, in 2016, an interracial couple is still news. Sigh.

  1. Some of the best families have no money, so it shouldn’t be just about that. Will this man be a good and present father in their child’s life whether they are married or not should be the first question?

It’s been really upsetting to me lately to see all these black rappers choosing “exotic” (i.e. biracial) women to have kids with just because they have a nice light complexion and and “good hair”, yet a year or two later they seem to be cursing the day they met these women (Chris Brown, Future, 50 Cent — the list goes on) and calling them Wh*res and Gold-diggers. Hopefully, TIKA’s choice is more about the man ability to be a father, not just a baby daddy. If so, I wish her the best regardless of his race or hers.

  2. I AM OK WITH IT TIKA, I CAN NOT WAIT TILL THE HAVES AND HAVE NOT RETURN, I AM REALLY GOING TO MISS YOU, HOPE U DO NOT GET KILLED . I LOVE THE SHOW U ARE A GOOD ACTRESS. GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR BABY.

  3. I don’t even know why this is an issue. Good luck to you and your family Tika. Nobody bats an eye with black men and other races of women because it is so common, in fact it is almost expected. Black women deserve a choice as well, and usually make good ones.

If he is the one that makes her happy, what is the problem. As with most of the comments, black men have been doing this for years. They become successful, and pass over the black women. I don’t see anyone putting them down. Hell, I might get one myself.

    • I know that’s right to the latter!
Besides that is her’s and the baby’s father business in the first place.

Now what is my business- I wonder if she ever had thoughts about is acting as a down-low man and the vision of him sexually with another man (“Jeffy” Gavin Houston) on HAHN. Well obviously, she got past that even being an issue…but I just wondered.

      • She’s an actress. She knows good acting when she sees it. After all he obviously got passed her playing a ho’ as even being a issue. The are ACTORS. That’s what they do. The only people who blur the lines between what they see on screen and actual real life are the ones who watch it. That’s why you see so many serious comments from people about unreality shows.

  5. Well, well, surprise, surprise!! I didn’t see that coming, lol. They’ll have a beautiful kid together and I think they make a really cute couple.

  6. I’m a black female and I love the two of you. Go make your beautiful baby. Black men don’t see beauty in black women. So if the white men see how talented and beautiful you are ,Rock on sister

    • Being a black man, I take offense to your statement that black men don’t see the beauty. You couldn’t be more wrong. Don’t categorize every black man in that respect. Yes, there are many that have crossed over, but there are still many, many more that love black women and love them and treat them as the queens they are.

I’m not thrilled about this either but who this slut has fucked to get pregnant by without the benefit of marriage doesn’t qualify as news! How’s about getting married next time before you have the baby?

  8. Congratulations Tika your baby is going to be blessed because of the love shared between you and the father. I must say that although I’m surprised by your choice, it has nothing to do with the race of the father. You’re so convincing as the bad girl in your role as Candace its sometime hard to separate fact from fiction. Love your man and forget the people who don’t like your choice of a mate. Hey they don’t know you!

  9. Let the haters hate, good for you, you choose who you want to love, black professional men do it every day and nothing is said, so live your life and be happy!!!!!

  10. I’m so happy for you ,my daughter is also mixed I caught so much hatred especially by me being stationed in Louisiana in the late 80’s for dating out of race but we all bleed red at the end of the day. It’s OK for our black men to date other races. I wish you the best God bless , love you

Good for her, these ballers and other black men get with white woman all the time. That baby is going to be pretty.. She pretty and he pretty too…

  12. What’s the big deal a lot of the black men don’t want to be with black women and have a family. Tika is a beautiful black woman I bet black men look right past her for a white woman at least he is a decent looking guy. And I think it of blacks now days like reproducing and making these mixed race kids.
