Rapper and Grambling State University alumni E-40 gave back to his former middle school in Vallejo, Calif. today by donating $25,000 worth of Jansport backpacks filled with classroom supplies to students at Franklin Middle School.

That amounts to about 700 backpacks.

“I’m just giving back,” 40 told SFGate.com. “I love the kids.”

The artist, whose real name is Earl Stevens, told the gathered crowd that he made the honor roll while an eighth grade student at Franklin and that he grew up on nearby Magazine Street.

And as far as advice he could give to the students, he kept it simple. “Stay in school, stay positive, stay out of trouble,” he added. “Stay prayed up.”
