CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Attorneys in South Carolina have submitted proposed jury questionnaires for the upcoming federal death penalty trial of Dylann Roof in the Charleston church shooting and want a judge to keep them confidential.
Both defense and prosecution attorneys submitted the proposed questionnaires in a joint motion Monday.
They say the questions need to be sealed because public disclosure could affect the ability to seat an impartial jury in the case set to begin Nov. 7.
The 22-year-old Roof faces numerous charges including hate crimes in the shooting deaths of nine black parishioners at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church in June 2015. Between 1,200 and 1,500 potential jurors are expected to be summoned from the Charleston area.
Roof also faces the death penalty in a state murder trial to begin early next year.
