NEW YORK (AP) — Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has a book deal.
Holder’s “Pursuing Justice” will be released in 2018, the Random House imprint One World told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
“Pursuing Justice” will “offer a classic narrative” of an immigrant’s son who became the country’s first black attorney general, according to One World.
The book provides “a probing exploration of Holder’s time as Attorney General, when he faced unprecedented issues around civil rights and civil liberties, finance and terrorism, and the crisis of mass incarceration.
“Holder will also offer fresh ideas for understanding the legacy of our criminal justice system and reforming it,” One World announced.
Holder will work on the book with Douglas Blackmon, an award-winning author and journalist whose “Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II” won the Pulitzer Prize in 2009.
Holder served as attorney general in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2015, a time highlighted by his challenging of federal drug sentences and state voter ID laws and presiding over federal civil rights investigations arising from the police shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, of Michael Brown, an unarmed black 18-year-old.
He also clashed with Republicans in Congress over the gun-running program “Operation Fast and Furious” and was criticized by civil liberties advocates for allowing the government to collect phone records of Americans accused of no crime.
