Craig Sager may be fighting for his life, but back in 1993, he saved Dennis Rodman’s.

In NBA star Dennis Rodman‘s 1996 autobiography Bad As I Wanna Be, he spoke briefly on his suicidal thoughts. Rodman was short on details, but with broadcaster Craig Sager covering Sports Illustrated this week, more context has been added to the story.

Reporter Lee Jenkins interviewed Sager about his health and his passion for sports. Sager revealed he helped stop Rodman from committing suicide. He remembers tracking down the Pistons player at a Detroit strip club:

“He had the gun. He was going to do it. I told him how stupid that would be,” Sager recalls.

Elsewhere in the piece, Sager said he and Rodman and plenty of other pro athletes are very close. The 64-year-old discussed his health woes – he’s currently fighting leukemia – his storied career as a commentator, and what’s to come in his interview with Sports Illustrated.
