Edgar Ramírez plays Panamanian boxer Roberto Durán, who develops a fierce rivalry with American fighter Sugar Ray Leonard in the upcoming American biographical sport film “Hands of Stone.” Directed and written by Jonathan Jakubowicz, the film marks singer Usher Raymond’s big screen debut in the role of Sugar Ray. The biopic also stars Robert De Niro, Ellen Barkin and Ana de Armas. The film is scheduled to be released on August 26, 2016, by The Weinstein Company.

“I don’t know if this is the one that would win me an Oscar or not. I’m going into it offering my interpretation and my hard work and my dedication to be the best Sugar Ray ever,” Usher said in an interview with Men’s Health. “Or as good as the man can be. I’ve spoken to him, and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to live up to him. But I’ll try to be better than him.”

In terms of landing his first leading role in a major film, Usher said, “It seems like this is a real passion project. It’s a film that everybody is so invested in, and I have the good fortune of having the character I’m playing still around.”
