Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers lost to the Denver Broncos 24-10 at Super Bowl 50, breaking the hearts of several fans. While Newton couldn’t get past Peyton Manning‘s squad, his appearance in the big game was one for the books.

Newton, the NFL MVP of the year, was a favorite of both fans and analysts who felt it was his time to shine. He also is the first Black quarterback to win the MVP award. Just the third Black quarterback to play in the big game, Newton is the first among five other Black quarterbacks to also have won the coveted Heisman Trophy.

At 26-years-old, Newton is entering his physical prime and led the Panthers to a regular season where they just lost one game before the Broncos defeat Sunday night. Analysts praised Newton all season long for taking his team as far as he did and blasted his weak receiving corps. On the back of a bruising defense and Newton’s phyiscal gifts, they were able to nearly take home the championship.

The Panthers’ loss gives Manning just his second Super Bowl ring. It was the fifth such appearance for Manning in the Super Bowl and he is expected to retire at the end of what was an up and down season for the legendary gun slinger.
