Remember way back when Donald Trump questioned whether then candidate for President Barack Obama was born in the United States?

Trump: “I feel that there was certainly a chance that he was not born in this country. Now if he were not born in this country, that means he can’t be president!”

Well the birther issue is back!

And the target this time is Trump’s GOP rival for President, Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

Here’s the issue this time – Ted Cruz was born in Canada to a Cuban father and an American mother.

Cruz’s father was working in the oil business in the Great White North at the time.

So, Trump wonders if that disqualifies Cruz from being President because the constitution states that an American President needs to be a natural born U.S. citizen.

Here’s what Trump told CNN on Wednesday about the Cruz situation:

Trump: “How do you run against the democrat, whoever it may be, when you have this hanging over your head? If they bring a lawsuit, a lawsuit would take 2, 3 years.”

Trump says it would be a big problem for the GOP.

He says he only brought up the issue in response to a question from a Washington Post reporter.

At first Cruz responded by tweeting out a link to Fonzie from Happy Days jumping a shark while water skiing.

But now he genuinely has to respond to the claims because it has taken over the news cycle.

Cruz: “The question is quite straight forward and it’s settled law. That the child of a US citizen born abroad, is a natural born citizen.”

He moved to Texas at age 4 and had dual citizenship in the US and Canada.

But in 2014 Cruz renounced his Canadian citizenship.

According to the constitution he’s a citizen!

This is the exact same script from the Obama birther days.

President Obama’s mother was a natural born U.S. citizen.

His father was from Africa.

However, the BIG difference is that Obama was actually born IN the United States (Hawaii), makes Obama doubly more qualified, at least in the citizenship department, to be eligible to run for president.

Yet the outcry back then was much harsher from conservatives who actually forced President Obama to release his long form birth certificate.

I wonder what the big difference is this time.
