Are you confused when you hear the words sulfate, clarifying, or cowash? Do you know when to use a shampoo or cowash on your natural hair? Below I’ll explain the difference between sulfate, clarifying, and cowash.

Sulfate Shampoos are known to strip the hair of its natural oils and moisture. This is not necessarily the best option for natural hair because it can lead to dryness and breakage.

Sulfate Free Shampoos are better for natural hair because they do not strip the hair like sulfate shampoos.

Cowash products gently cleanse the hair without stripping the hair of its natural oils. These type of shampoos work best for light weekly cleansing.

Clarifying Shampoos help remove product build up. If you use gels, heavy oils, or serums you may have to clarify more often. After using a clarifying shampoo proceed with a conditioner to replenish the moisture back into the hair.

Signs that it may be time to use a clarifying shampoo:

– The hair feels coated and heavy.

– The hair feels limp and has less volume.

– You are experiencing more breakage than usual.
