Veteran rapper and producer Jermaine Dupri has over 30 years of experience in the music industry, so naturally he’s the best person to turn to if you’re trying to jump in the music industry. And Lifetime seems to agree! On New Year’s Day The Rap Game showcases the talent of young rappers who are looking to take their career to the next level.

“I pick 5 kids out of hundreds of thousands of kids and I have them come live in a house in Atlanta to see how bad they want to be a rapper. They kind of think they’re stars already and I’ve got to bring them back down to earth,” Dupri said.

What he looks for when signing a new artist:

“Each time it’s something different. I’m looking for something different than what the average person is looking at. When I signed Anthony Hamilton, people thought his look was raggedy and people questioned if he could go on to be a star. But I liked everything about him just the way he was. Most of the time I’m looking for something different,” he said.

The Rap Game premiere’s January 1 at 10p/9p CST. Click the link above to hear the entire interview.
