Over the weekend, just three blocks of Bethune Cookman University, two men are expected to recover from gunshot wounds.
News Journal Online reports:
No one was injured in the second shooting, which took place just after 9:45 p.m. in the 200 block of North Martin Luther King Boulevard, reports state. Daytona Beach police are investigating both incidents. Authorities have not made any arrests.
The shooting involved two suspects described only as black males wearing white shirts. The victims were a 17-year-old Daytona Beach boy, a 16-year-old Holly Hill boy and Anthony Thompson, 22. The teens’ names were redacted from reports.
Witnesses told officers the 17-year-old was walking southbound in front of the Judson M. Phillips Development Building, which abuts Bethune-Cookman’s campus, when he and one of the suspects began arguing, according to reports.
During the argument, the suspect struck the teen in the face with a glass Heineken bottle. The 17-year-old left the scene and returned moments later with Thompson and the 16-year-old victim. The three confronted the suspect, who pulled out a gun as did one of his companions. Witnesses said the suspect fired at the three victims, who fled the scene.
Reports indicate witnesses gave conflicting reports as to how the two suspects fled the scene. Some said they ran westbound through the B-CU campus while others reported that they drove away in a red Nissan Altima.
One of the bullets struck and shattered the rear window of a 2006 Suzuki parked near the incident, reports indicated. The car was towed to be processed for evidence. Police recovered the glass beer bottle and four .45-caliber shell casings from the scene.
The 17-year-old victim sustained a small cut under the right eye after being struck with the bottle. He went to the hospital to get medical treatment, reports state. No one was wounded.
Daytona Beach police officials and a B-CU spokeswoman did not immediately return phone calls.
The shooting was the second Daytona officers responded to Saturday night. A previous incident occurred just before 6 p.m. at Walnut Street and Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard. Levar Williams, 36, was shot in the left side of his torso, and Leroy Harvey, 33, was shot in the leg during a shooting that stemmed from an argument, according to reports. The men’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.
