Aretha Franklin talks to the Tom Joyner Morning Show about her experience singing for Pope Francis when he visited Philadelphia last month. The Queen of Soul is no stranger to singing for royalty, in 1987 she sang for Pope Pope Jean Paul II in Detroit.

“It was super, super exciting. Really exciting. Backstage in a room, the secret service ushered me in and I gave him the gift of my Dad’s sermons and he thanked me and passed the gift out to his people. I curtsied and stepped back. He asked me to pray for him.”

How did she choose the song?

“I selected Amazing Grace because it’s universal and it’s loved by all faiths. It was my biggest selling gospel album.”
