Dear Tom,

My mother raised me as a single mom while working for the U.S. postal service.  She retired after 36 years – 13 of those years were spent working the night shift– 4 pm to midnight.  During the day, she took college courses…I know it took a minute but after 11 years, she got her degree in education.

She taught school for a couple of years while continuing to work at the post office at night until the post office offered her a regular 9 to 5 managerial position.

She couldn’t have done it without the help of her mother, and now that I am a single mom, she has helped me with my 3 children – they call her the g-o-d: grandmother on duty.

She stands 5 feet 4 and they are all 6 feet or taller: my 23 year old son has graduated college and is working; I have a 16 year old in high school who plays football & basketball and my 12 year old is a Girl Scout and plays basketball.

For 23 years and counting, she has picked them up, dropped them off, drove them around all over and attended their extra-curricular activities.  she has done all of this while working full-time and caring for her elderly father who is 88 and has been living with her for a number of years.

My mom is a huge fan of the Tom’s and has been on the cruise a couple of times – the last time she went was in 2009.  I feel so badly because her taking care of everyone means that she has been unable to join you on other cruises.

In her spare time, she likes to watch movies, go on short trips, do home improvements on her house and spend time with her post office friends.
