A new dance craze is sweeping the nation.
“Hit the Quan,” inspired by the colorful sound of popular southern rapper Rich Homie Quan, has captured the attention and excitement of the black youth in Memphis, Tenn.
This titillating two-step, paired with a catchy song, were created by emerging Hip Hop artist, I Heart Memphis. His music hasn’t reached the mainstream just yet, but it’s generating quite a buzz in his hometown.
“I love I Heart Memphis,” children at a local community center said.
Memphis, whose real name is Richard Colbert, has gained quite a following in recent months. However, it appears the rapper’s past misdeeds are beginning to catch up with him. According to a police report, Colbert was one of two men accused of sexually assaulting a female victim, who was under the influence. WREG.com first reported the alleged rape in May. This past Tuesday, during an interview, Colbert vehemently denied the charges leveled against him.
“No, I did not,” Colbert said in response to questions about the assault charge. “I was at the wrong place, wrong time, and my name got caught up in something,” he explained.
Colbert plans to fight the charge and said he would not let it get in the way of his, now popular, music. Community leaders said parents needed to be on alert.
“He’s being accused,” Dionysus Sisson, a coach with Memphis Athletic Ministries, said. “We don’t know if he’ll get found guilty yet, but at the same time we still have to look at the role model that we let these people portray in front of our children.”
Sisson said it was important for young people to separate the rapper from the man and decide for themselves what path they wanted to follow.
“The rape charge is real. The song and what he did is entertainment. I still see him as an entertainer,” Sisson told WREG.
Colbert remains optimistic; he firmly believes that his charges will be dropped. He and a second man charged in the case are expected to appear in court next week.
