Donald Trump‘s accession to the GOP presidential candidacy throne has been swift, but not without Trump-isms that read as glaring red flags not only in his presidential candidacy, but in his general life view.

Take, for instance, Trump’s inflammatory comment regarding how he envisions Mexican border control should be improved, labeling Mexicans as rapists and criminals. His reasoning?

“I mean somebody’s doing it!… Who’s doing the raping?”

Donald Trump and his PR team have a narrow definition of rape, though—one that excludes Trump, doesn’t fully encompass the meaning of the term, and trivializes victims.

The Daily Beast published an article last night critiquing Trump’s assertion regarding people of Mexican descent in light of the, until now, brushed-over skeleton in his own closet. The publication was careful in choosing its headline: “Ex-Wife: Donald Trump Made Me Feel ‘Violated’ During Sex.”

By chance, I clicked, and the can of worms that unfurled within the article was astonishing. It was nearly beyond belief—but not when you consider Trump’s past, dotted with idiotic, unfounded musings and a seemingly endless pool of wealth.

I mentioned that The Daily Beast was careful with its headline. It had to be—The Trump Organization’s “Special Counsel,” Michael Cohen, was severe in his threats.

From The Daily Beast:

“I will make sure that you and I meet one day while we’re in the courthouse. And I will take you for every penny you still don’t have. And I will come after your Daily Beast and everybody else that you possibly know,” Cohen said. “So I’m warning you, tread very fucking lightly, because what I’m going to do to you is going to be fucking disgusting. You understand me?”

“You write a story that has Mr. Trump’s name in it, with the word ‘rape,’ and I’m going to mess your life up… for as long as you’re on this frickin’ planet… you’re going to have judgments against you, so much money, you’ll never know how to get out from underneath it,” he added.

Wow. Those threats are pretty extreme coming from someone who represents a candidate for public office. Why so serious, you may ask, Michael Cohen?

If the threat was benign and unfounded, it most likely wouldn’t cause a kerfuffle in Trump’s camp. But it did.

“You’re talking about the frontrunner for the GOP, presidential candidate, as well as a private individual who never raped anybody. And, of course, understand that by the very definition, you can’t rape your spouse.”

Cohen added that there is no such thing, legally, as a man raping his wife. “You cannot rape your spouse,” he said. “There’s very clear case law.”

Cohen’s insistence is obviously false, though; marital rape has been outlawed in all 50 states since 1993.

Rape is defined asA criminal offense defined in most states as forcible sexual relations with a person against that person’s will.”

Cohen’s defense of Trump is transparent and fragile. It makes it seem as though no matter how Trump may have acted, he is infallible due to a statue that doesn’t exist.

The threats from Trump’s camp (and The Daily Beast article) stem from information in the 1993 book Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump, written by former Texas Monthly and Newsweek reporter Harry Hurt III.

It contains a description of an alleged violent attack and rape of Trump’s former wife, Ivana. The book has a statement from Ivana, printed on the first page:

“During a deposition given by me in connection with my matrimonial case, I stated that my husband had raped me. [O]n one occasion during 1989, Mr. Trump and I had marital relations in which he behaved very differently toward me than he had during our marriage. As a woman, I felt violated, as the love and tenderness, which he normally exhibited towards me, was absent. I referred to this as a ‘rape,’ but I do not want my words to be interpreted in a literal or criminal sense.”

It’s important to note that the former couple’s divorce settlement, finalized in 1991, includes a “gag order that keeps her from talking about her marriage to Donald Trump without his permission.”

If Ivana is not allowed to speak on the marriage without Trump’s consent, can the book’s quotes really be considered her unfiltered words?

Ivana released another statement today, according to CNN:

“I have recently read some comments attributed to me from nearly 30 years ago at a time of very high tension during my divorce from Donald. The story is totally without merit. Donald and I are the best of friends and together have raised three children that we love and are very proud of. I have nothing but fondness for Donald and wish him the best of luck on his campaign. Incidentally, I think he would make an incredible president,” Ivana Trump said in the statement, which was verified by the Trump campaign.

Verified by the Trump campaign, you say? Doesn’t this sound exactly like the type of canned statement Trump would need right now?

We’ve seen people with access to wealth wield it as a weapon to make past indiscretions disappear. In fact, this past year, Robert Durst and Bill Cosby made headlines for doing just that.

Share this information and don’t allow Trump to do the same.
