Footage of Florida State University freshman quarterback De’Andre Johnson punching a woman in the face was released today, leading to several battery charges lodged against him, reports the Tallahassee Democrat.

The 19-year-old was accused of punching a woman in the face at a Florida bar last month. The two engaged in physical contact while pushing to get a drink at Yianni’s nightclub on June 24.

State Attorney Willie Meggs charged Johnson with misdemeanor battery after viewing the footage. The woman, whose black eye was still visible after attending court on June 30, suffered bruises near her left eye, swelling of the left cheek and upper lip, and a small cut near the bridge of her nose.

Meggs says she still wants to press charges against the player. Johnson has since been arrested on a battery charge, but has been released from the Leon Country jail on a $500 bond.

“She’s a good witness and she wants to testify,” Meggs said. “She’s a little nervous about it.”

Jose Baez, the same lawyer who helped Casey Anthony obtain an acquittal in 2011, will represent the freshman, telling reporters he “would investigate the accusations against Johnson thoroughly.”

At first, FSU suspended Johnson from the team indefinitely for violating the school’s athletic department policy in light of the incident. Now, The Associated Press reports that Johnson has been dismissed from the team.

His lawyer released a statement from Johnson, according to ESPN.com

“While it is clear from the video that De’Andre Johnson was not the initial aggressor, his family wants to take the lead in helping him learn and grow from this experience. He is currently participating in community service and faith-based programs focused on battered women, substance abuse and the empowerment of children.

“De’Andre is extremely embarrassed by this situation and would like to express his heartfelt apologies to everyone, including those who were directly affected, Coach Fisher and his teammates, the entire Florida State University community, as well as his family and friends.”
