Mali Music has been around for years.

Seven to be exact.

Mostly underground and quietly in the black church. But it was his performance at the 2013 BET Awards that got “us” talking. A year later and Jennifer Lopez would call to invite him to perform on American Idol.

And that’s when the world took notice (his single sales jumped overnight landing him in the No. 2 spot on the R&B charts).

But even after hitting the stage on two of music’s biggest platforms, some still scratched their heads  in confusion when the 2015 Grammy nominees for urban contemporary album were announced. Who was Mali Music, and how did he land a nomination alongside Beyoncé, Chris Brown, Jhené Aiko and Pharrell Williams?

He’s a lot of things mixed into one. Singer? Check. Rapper? Check. Poet? Producer? Songwriter? Check, check and check.

The talented musician not only brings a vocal excitement back to the charts (am I the only one that misses real singing?) but his ability to play two instruments and the unabashedly positive and uplifting message in his music further confirm that he’s one of the industries top contenders for longevity.
