WNBA stars Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson may be trying to put the past behind them after getting married only weeks after they were both arrested for a domestic violence dispute. But the WNBA is not going to let them go unpunished for their actions. The WNBA President Laurel Richie announced that the two players will receive a seven game suspension in the next regular season. Seven games might not sound like a whole lot, but considering that’s about one-fifth of the regular season of 34 games, neither their teams nor the players themselves will be happy about this.

WNBA president, Laurel Richie announced the seven-game ban yesterday – the longest in the history of the league, whilst emphasizing that the league, “takes all acts of violence seriously.” Richie also acknowledged that people do make mistakes and that with assistance, they can change. I think we can all agree that this is an expensive mistake for Johnson and Griner to learn, but also one that will hopefully teach them some important lessons for years to come.

It’s definitely a good thing that the league is taking violence off the court seriously. But while we’re on the subject, why doesn’t every league – women and men – seem to do the same? I think we can all agree that the WNBA is setting a standard here that maybe others (side-eye NFL) should follow.
