The Real Housewives of Atlanta boasts a lot of complicated relationships, none much more complicated than that of Todd Tucker and Mama Joyce. Todd, is of course, married to Atlanta housewife Kandi Burruss and Joyce is her controlling mother. The two have clashed over everything from finances to Kandi’s wedding plans and at one point, Joyce and Todd’s mother, Miss Sharon were feuding. Sadly, Miss Sharon had a stroke and died last year.
But in a turnaround, Tucker, Burruss and Mama Joyce are going on a ski trip together, something that is obviously controversial enough to get its own three-part special.
“No I haven’t,” says Mama Joyce. “The most skiing I’ve done has been a top of the garbage can on the lawn beside my house while taking out the trash,” she says. “I might have a 57-year-old body, but I have a 65-year-old knee so I didn’t get on the skis.”
Blending families is challenging in the best of times. This upcoming trip should resonate with any family struggling with those issues. Mama Joyce says spending more time with her in-laws has softened her up a little as it relates to working on a better relationship with her son-in-law.
“You find out a lot of people are not as narrow minded as you think they are. And I think the in-laws find out that you are not as gruesome as people portray that you are. It opens up a line of communication. We’ve come a little closer. My only thing is Kandi is the only child I have left. I love her more than life itself. If she’s happy, I’m happy,” Mama Joyce says.
Mama Joyce also says that RHOA contributes to making her look much worse than she is. In real life, she says she’s the person people seek out to be a substitute mother.
“I always speak my mind. If I love you, I tell you how I feel. If I don’t love you, I won’t bother. Some people will let you walk around with a stain on your dress, but I won’t let that happen. But if I don’t love you, I’ll just ignore it like everybody else.”
Unfortunately, Mama Joyce’s kindness didn’t get a chance to extend to Todd’s mother before she died unexpectedly last year. She and Todd’ s mother often clashed. Mama Joyce says she’s sorry they didn’t have the chance to resolve their differences.
“I regret that we never really had a chance to get any closure. But there was nothing I could do about that. That’s something that the Lord only controls. The Lord puts things on you. I have to say that I don’t have that power. Only God has that power.”
Mama Joyce says she and her sisters might have their own reality show spinoff, but she’s not sure at the moment if that will happen.
