TV host and doctor Mehmet Oz has been forced to defend himself after a group of his colleagues petitioned to have him fired from his position at Columbia University over claims that his medical philosophies are based on loose facts and questionable remedies.

Oz is currently the Vice Chair for the Ivy League’s University College Of Physicians & Department of Surgery, a fact which apparently burns up his haters, ten of whom came together to petition for his removal.

The group sent an email to Dr. Lee Goldman, the current Dean of Columbia’s Health Sciences and Medicines Goldman, urging him to remove Oz because of his “quack treatments.”

Below is an excerpt of their harsh review:

“[Dr. Oz obtains a] disdain for science and for evidence-based medicine, as well as baseless and relentless opposition to the genetic engineering of food crops [has] “manifested an egregious lack of integrity by promoting quack treatments and cures in the interest of personal financial gain.”

“Members of the public are being misled and endangered, which makes Dr. Oz’s presence on the faculty of a prestigious medical institution unacceptable.”

Oz has been outspoken about genetically modified foods and has promoted natural and holistic remedies on his hit Fox show. In fact, many think this is the exact reason he has earned criticism from those who stand to earn bucks off of pharmaceuticals and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

In recent years especially, Oz’s tactics and lessons have come to be challenged more frequently, and it’s not always for the best. CNN noted that, in 2014, the doctor was sent to Capitol Hill for a hearing about a weight loss product he had advertised on his popular daytime show but was reportedly not as safe as he had promised.

Oz has responded to the controversy. In a short letter, he defended his claims:

“I bring the public information that will help them on their path to be their best selves. We provide multiple points of view, including mine which is offered without conflict of interest. That doesn’t sit well with certain agendas which distort the facts. For example, I do not claim that GMO (genetically modified organism) foods are dangerous, but believe that they should be labeled like they are in most countries around the world. I will address this on the show next week.”

Dr. Oz, who rose to fame after his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show, is currently one of the most popular hosts on daytime television. This could certainly be a motivating factor for the group who is trying to have him fired. But some say that Oz has compromised his medical integrity for ratings.

What are your thoughts? Is this an attack from jealous colleagues or a reason for real concern?
