Police are searching for a prisoner who managed to grab a security guard’s gun and escape a Virginia hospital early Tuesday, running off barefoot and in a hospital gown, CNN reports.

Authorities suspect the prisoner, Woseen Assaye, is currently with his girlfriend after taking off in a stolen vehicle, abandoning it and stealing another. The woman lives in the area, authorities said.

The inmate was reportedly being watched over by two private guards in his room at the Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia. According to Fairfax County police, Assaye overpowered a guard and took his gun. The hospital was put on lockdown while authorities searched for Assaye, who was arrested last week and charged with multiple robberies in Northern Virginia.

From CNN:

Police reported the details of a car Assaye was believed to have stolen. They found that car, then reported the second vehicle he allegedly stole: a 2008 dark gray Hyundai Elantra with Virginia plate XTU-5024.

Assaye was being held on federal charges of armed bank robbery. He was taken to the hospital for treatment after attempting to harm himself, police said. A private security company was hired to guard him. He was known as the “bicycle bandit” for how he allegedly made his escape after robberies

Police are searching for Assaye under the assumption that he is still armed, but no longer in the hospital gown, the Associated Press reports. Police tweeted a photograph of the women believed to be Assaye’s girlfriend.

A search continues.
